Research Projects



Current Research Projects:

1. Development of a Peer-mentoring program through the continuum of care for persons with spinal cord injury. Developing this process for persons in the acute care hospital, during their initial Rehabilitation and following their return to their community. 2. Development of educational materials containing information for persons in wheelchairs, who would like to travel as well as visit state parks and recreation areas. Contact person is Patrick Kitzman at UK (phkitz1@email.uky.edu).

3. The Kentucky AgrAbility program has several projects to assist farmers with disabilities. Contact person is John Hancock at UK (jhancock@email.uky.edu).

Grants Funded:

1. 2010-2014 USDA AgrAbility Grant. Principle investigator is John Hancock. This grant is a partnershiip with UK, Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, Kentucky State University, and KY Vocational Rehabilitation. This grant is focused on providing services and education to farmers with disabilities. In particular they will be targeting undeserved people such as Appalachia, women and minority farmers.

2. 2nd Annual Rural Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Conference. PIs: Kitzman, P. Small conference grant. The Paralyzed Veterans of America.

3. Enhancing Capacity of the Kentucky Appalachian Rural Rehabilitation Network. PIs: Kitzman, P., Harrison, A., Costich, J. National Institutes of Health (NIH/National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities).

4. Community-Based Spinal Cord Injury Peer-Mentoring Network in Kentucky's Appalachian Region. Investigators: Beth Hunter and Michelle Graybeal (Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Foundation). This project is currently recruiting individuals who are interested in becoming a Peer-mentor or would like mentorship.
